Dear DHS-team,

I am using the data from the children's recode for 30 African countries and got a bit confused with the height-for-age standard deviation that is reported. For the old datasets I used the supplementary files where the WHO 2006 child growth standards are reported. When I divide the h-a std. deviation by 100 I get numbers that seem quite reasonable to interpret according to the WHO suggested cut-offs. I am, however, not at all sure whether I can report this as a z-score, because in the z-score formula the h-a std. deviation is in fact part of it. So, do I need to use additional command (e.g., zscore06 in Stata) for calculating the z-score? If yes, which command in Stata (v. 13.1) would you recommend me for that?

Another point that is also a bit confusing for me in the children's recode file is that you have the two variables v024 and v101 that are both called "region". I did random tabulation for several countries (e.g., Benin 96, Burkina Faso 2010, Cameroon 1991, etc.) and could not see any difference in the labels or the number of observations of the two variables. So, what is exactly the difference between the two?

Thank you very much for your help!
Albena

Dear User,
Your post has been forwarded to one of our experts. However, I can respond to your 2nd point re: V024 and V101.
According to the DHS Recode Manual, V024 De facto region of residence is a copy of V101, added to this section to allow for analysis of
completion rates by region. The Standard Recode Manual is on our website and can be found http:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-DHSG4-DHS-Questionna ires-and-Manuals.cfm
Thank you!

Variables HW70, HW71 and HW72 contain the z-score values. There is no need to run the zscore06 software as that would produce the same z-score values.
