Hello,

I have checked the DHS recode manual to learn the label names for partner's/husband's occupation, and for household floor/roof material, but my variables appear to have additional codes not listed and so I'm not sure whether these are separate categories or whether they can be collapsed/regrouped with the standard codes.

For example, a tabulation of v705 shows 0 through 11, but the recode manual provides label names for 0 through 9 codes. Are "10" and "11" country-specific subcodes for "1" (professional, technical, managerial), or are they separate occupation groups?

For floor/roof material (v127 and v129), a tab lists codes "40" and/or "41" whereas the recode manual provides 3 major categories: 10 to 19 "natural"; 20 to 29 "rudimentary" and 30 to 35 "finished".

I haven't been able to locate a publication which might provide some insight into the names of these aditional codes. Please advise if there is one I can reference.

Many thanks in advance,
A Conklin

These are probably survey specific codes. Which dataset are you using? Please provide the specific dataset name and if more than one dataset, which issue is in which dataset.

Hi Trevor,

I apologise I forgot to mention I have an amalgamated dataset.

For the v705 variable, code "11" is in Guinea DHS2012 but code "10" is found in several countries/years:
Malawi (DHS 2000); Rwanda (DHS 2005); Mali and Niger (DHS 2006); Sao Tome/Principe (DHS 2008-09); Nepal (DHS 2011); Gabon, Guinea, Kyrgyzstan (DHS 2012); Philippines (DHS 2013); and Democratic Republic of Congo (DHS 2014).

The v127, code "41" is in Cambodia (2000, 2005 and 2010).
For v129, code "40" is in Azerbaijan 2006 only but code "41" is in Peru (2004-06; 2007-08; 2009; and 2012).

Is there another source/document I should use that provides the label names for country-specific roof/floor materials? Would country reports provide a description of different materials?

Many thanks in advance,
Annalijn

For each of these surveys I would open the relevant individual dataset and tabulate the variables.

For example, for Cambodia 2000 a simple tabulation of v127 shows that code 41 means "House boat", and that in 2005 and 2010 it is labeled "Floating house", which is presumably the same thing.

Similarly for Azerbaijan 2006 code 40 means "ruberoid/asbest". If you search for Ruberoid on google you will find an explanation of this type of roofing. Asbest sounds like an abbreviation of asbestos. This category appears to be an extension of the codes for "finished" roofing as all codes between 31 and 39 are also used.

Tabulating the Peru 2004-08 data shows that code 41 means "no roof". I didn't check the other datasets for Peru.

I would similarly tabulate v705 from the individual datasets to check the codes that you do not have labels for.
