The 2008-2009 Kenya DHS has the following variables to indicate rural / urban
* hr:hv025
* pr:hv025
* ir:v025
* kr:v025
* mr:mv025

Are these variables related to the 2009 Kenya census enumeration area type, which has the values
* rural
* urban
* peri-urban

If so, how is "peri-urban" mapped?

Many thanks,

Bill

Dear Bill,

Here is a response from Senior Sampling Statistician, Dr. Ruilin Ren:
The Kenya 2008-2009 DHS used the 1999 census frame and urban-rural definition. The final survey report does not have a survey design write up, so I am not sure how the peri-urban was treated. But for most of the countries, peri-urban is classified as rural in the urban-rural setting, so is the Kenya 2014 DHS which used the 2009 census results.

Thanks,
Sarah-DHS
