I have a question about child health indicators by birth order using Stata.

So for variables like BORD (birth order number), it's clear that the 1st one (bord_01) contains the information for all children. If you tab bord_02, then the first child group is removed and the birth order is categorized from the second birth.

Now, for variables like h7 (DTP3 coverage), does the same rule apply? So if I tab h7_1 does it include all children 12-59 months old, and h7_2 includes all of the second and later children? Or does h7_1 ONLY include the most recent child, and h7_2 ONLY includes the 2nd most recent child?

Thanks.

You are misunderstanding the meaning of the variables. bord_01 is for the last birth, not for all births. bord_02 is for the next-to-last birth.

Similarly, h7_1 is for the LAST birth in the last five years (0-59 months), not all children aged 12-59; h7_2 is for the next-to-last birth in the last five years, etc.

Note that if the last birth died then h7_1 will be blank. for example, if there are two children born in the last five years, and the last one died then h7_1 will be blank, and h7_2 will contain the information for the last living child born in the last five years.
