I want to calculate the cause specific deaths mortality rate. I have collected the deaths data from Varbal autopsy dataset. Now for denominator I need to population of under 5 age. Where can I find the information of population and what is the standard procedure for calulating this.

Thank you for submitting your question. Could you please provide some more detailed information so we can better advise you?
Can you let us know:
• Which survey you are using (Include country name and year)?
• Which data files you are referring to?
• Which software you are using (Stata, SPSS, R, etc.)?
If you are trying to match a Table in a final report, please also indicate which table and which estimate you are trying to match.

Using multiple years BDHS IR, KR, HR and VA files for cause specific U5 analysis. So far used bord along with cluster, house & mother(respondent) to match between IR, KR files in R. Looking for a key variable to match with VA files. I am not sure what the child line number corresponds with other files! Also for analyzing the rate per cause, how should i proceed.

Thank you.

Edit: I just found out that the missing child's line number(NA) in KR or IR files are actually the one in the VA child line number.

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

You can match the VA file with the children who died in the KR file. That is, qncluster=v001, qnhnumber=v002, qnmother=v003, and qnline=bord, for children in the KR file who have b5=0.

The KR file includes many v* variables from the IR file, describing the mother.

You cannot do a case-by-case merge with the other files. There have been many posts on merges among the PR, IR, and MR files, but the children who died do not appear in those files.
