Hello,
I am working on estimating the desired fertility for men using the DHS data from Angola. However, the available microdata for men does not include birth history but does provide the ideal number of children and the age of the most recent child.
I am uncertain about how to begin estimating the desired fertility rate for men with these data.
Could you please provide some guidance on how to proceed with this estimation?
Thank you!

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
The English version of what you are looking for is "wanted" fertility, not "desired". Same thing, but if you look for the calculation in the Guide to DHS Statistics or the GitHub programs, that would be the search term.
Wanted fertility rates, which are usually given in the last section of Chapter 6 of a final report, require a birth history. DHS surveys almost never include birth histories for men. You can compare women and men in terms of ideal number of children, and (in some surveys) whether the latest birth/pregnancy was wanted (see mv225), but not in terms of fertility rates or wanted fertility rates.
