Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

Household structure is determined with the HR or PR files, not with the IR file. There have been responses to earlier posts on this topic, including Stata programs. Please search through the forum using keywords such as "nuclear" and "extended". The DHS staff do not use SPSS, so you will have to translate the code from Stata to SPSS if you want SPSS versions of these programs.

If you want more help, please say which survey you are using and provide definitions of the household types you want to identify.
