Hello,

I want to explore child nutrition based on HAZ, WHZ, and WAZ scores and the incidence of stunting, wasting and underweight from the NFHS data set. I plan to use the IR data set, expecting I could use the maternal characteristics while analysing child nutrition. Can you guide me with the codes for this? Also, I would like to merge the household characteristics to the KR file. Can you help me on this too?

Thank You

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
You need to use the KR file, which has one record for each child. The Z scores for children are in that file (in the hw variables), and virtually all of the information about the mother is on the same record (in the v variables).

Do we need to calculate the Z scores, as I am unable to find the HAZ and WAZ variables under the hw variables? The hw variables give me only the standard deviation and the percentile

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
For women in the IR file, it is recommended that you use the body mass index, v445. That's what is reported in the final report on the NFHS-5. I too do not see variables for the HAZ, WAZ, and WHZ for women in the IR file.

For children, the HAZ, WAZ, and WHZ are given in the PR file as hc70, hc71, hc72, respectively, and in the KR file as hw70, hw71, hw72, respectively. They include a factor of 100 and have high values (listed below) that should be excluded.
. label list HW70

HW70:

9996 height out of plausible limits

9997 age in days out of plausible limits

        9998 flagged cases
