Hello, I'm working with child files in West Africa. There are a number of codes that appear for variables V113 and V116 that are not specified in the final report (see attached document). Can you give guidance on how these should be treated? If it's a small number of observations, I can see they could be treated as missing, but in some cases, there are hundreds or even thousands of observations. For example, may I assume that the 8,502 observations coded 31 for V116 in NI6 are composting toilets, although that category is not in the questionnaire or final report? For the 4,156 observations in SN6 coded 26, do users assume that is meant to be 25 (traditional latrines according to the Senegal report)? There are related issues with water source, especially code "43". Thank you.

I found the same issue working with the Ethiopia 2011 data for the household drinking water source code (HV201) - there multiple occurrences of "43" and "62" in the household file for this survey that also not specified in the final report.

Please add to this question Nigeria 6A (2013).

Source of drinking water (V113):

Code Observations
43 5109
62 328
72 905

Type of toilet facility (V116):

Code Observations
42 27
43 829

Dear User,
I started looking at your spreadsheet and looked at Niger (NI6), I am assuming you are looking at Niger DHS 2012. In this case code 31 for V116 is "No facility/bush/field." Looking at the frequencies, V116 weighted is 7,766 and V116 unweighted is 6,812. Are we looking at the same data set? I am looking at the Niger DHS 2012 survey.
I found this information by looking at MAP file distributed with the data set. Where did you get your number of 8502?
The recode application for Niger DHS 2012 recoded as follows:
box QH107 => HV205;
11-19 => QH107; { flush toliet }
21-29 => QH107; { pit latrine }
41 => 42; { bucket }
61 => 31; { no facility/bush/field }
=> QH107;
endbox;

Later in the application:
V116 = HV205; { Type of toilet facility }

This should help.

Also not sure where you are getting "composting toilet"

Thank you!

Oh I see now, thanks! I was using the codes from the questionnaire (final report and model) and didn't know about the MAP file. Slightly embarrassing, but hopefully this discussion will save others time and anxiety...

Liz - What is the MAP file that you are referring to? I'm working with the Ethiopia 2011 DHS data set and had a similar issue with unspecified drinking water source codes for HV201 of 43 and 62. I didn't see a MAP file for this dataset but since I'm not sure what it is it is entirely possible I've overlooked it!

The code definitions you gave for the question of the Niger dataset seemed to fit more for toilet facility type and not a dw source

Oops...disregard this query - I found the MAP file for the survey dataset and the answer for my question!

Dear User,
In the zip file(s) you downloaded, there should have been a file with an extension .MAP. It comes along with the data file,dictionary file, documentation file, frequency files (both weighted and unweighted).

For example, ETIR61.ZIP (Ethiopia hierarchical data set used with CSPro)contains:

ETIR61.DAT data file
ETIR61.DCF dictionary file
ETIR61.DOC documentation files (gives list of all country specific variables and details about the data)
ETIR61.FRQ unweighted frequencies
ETIR61.FRW weighted frequencies
ETIR61.MAP the map file

Thanks!
