Hello,
I have a doubt on the newly-issued data for Tanzania DHS 2022. In the occupation variable v717 (women's data), category 4 is not there anymore. In all the previous versions of the surveys for tanzania, this category is 4 = Agricltural - self employed and represented about 40-70% of the population given the importance of subsistence agriculture in Tanzania. In the 2022 survey we only have the category 5 = Agriculture - employee, which in the 2015 surveys represents 2% of the population and in the 2022 survey respresents 18% of the population.
This seems strange, given that according to my understanding agriculture - employee indicates a more skilled category (i.e. technical employees in large-scale farms), so it's very different from subsistence agriculture. Why is the category 4 not there in the var v717? How do you suggest to proceed for an analysis comparing wage employment of subsistence agricultural workers over time?
thanks a lot for all clarifications,
Mariachiara

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
Thank you for alerting us to this discrepancy. The codes for v716, which is country-specific, were different in the two surveys. They appear to have been applied correctly. The codes for v717 are standard across surveys, but they were not constructed consistently in the two surveys. We no longer have the detailed occupation data that would be required to re-classify as v717 in the 2022 survey. v717 in that survey should be used cautiously if at all.
