Hello,
I have merged the PR and IR files. I want to create a variable that shows a married woman(from the IR file), residing with both her mother-in-law and father-in-law, mother-in-law only, and father-in-law only. Basically, I want a variable that shows coresidence with in-laws. Can you please help me out with this?

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
This is an interesting request. I have written a Stata program to identify whether a woman is living with her father-in-law or mother-in-law, but it is more general. It refers also to coresidence with her own parents, and similarly for men, and their parents-in-law and parents. This is done entirely with the PR file. It applies only to women and men who are either the household head or the spouse of the head. The key variable is hv101, the relation to head code. Let us know if you have problems with the program. It should work for any survey, but the hv101 codes should be checked because they are not the same in all surveys. You can reduce this file to cases with hv117==1, and then merge with the IR file if you want to see whether there is a difference between women who are living with a parent or parent-in-law and those who are not. You will need to control for other things, such as her age and/or her husband's age. In the NFHS-5, only about 2% of these women (the spouse of the head or the head), are actually living with a parent-in-law.

Thank you, Tom.
I have some doubts.
1. In the below codes, don't we care about the missing values?
local ltypes "head_male head_female husband wife fa mo fa_inlaw mo_inlaw"
foreach lt of local ltypes {
egen n_`lt'=total(`lt'), by(hv024 hv001 hv002)
}
2. When I'm doing this tabulation tab head_type hv101, I'm getting the output in the attached image. Below this particular tabulation, you have written
"There should not be any cases with head_type=1 or 3 and hv101==2". Accordingly, I should not be getting 4 in the wife or husband column, right?
Can you please explain it?
