Hello,

I'm would like to confirm whether the DHS Colombia module for DV contains data on women's partners such as age, alcohol use, employment, etc? I have been having trouble finding such information. Any leads on this or how to extract such data would be greatly appreciated.

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

There are two ways to determine whether such information is included. The first is to search through the questionnaire, which is in an appendix to the final report. The second is to search through the Stata files using "lookfor" and a keyword, such as "lookfor husband".

These variables would not be in the DV module itself. The woman's responses to questions about the husband / partner, including age and employment, are mostly in the standard v7* variables. For example, v730 is the husband's age. Responses from the men themselves are in the MR files. The men and women who name each other as partners are in the couple's (CR) file.

In many DHS surveys, men are only interviewed in a subsample of households and the DV module is only administered in a subsample of households, and the subsamples do not overlap. In such surveys, it is unfortunately not possible to combine DV data and men's data. I don't know whether it's possible in the Colombia surveys--you have to check that.

Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it.
I would like to ask a follow-up question. The variables I'm looking for have an n/a, including v730 (husband/partner's age) and v701 (partner/husband's education). However, the dataset does have v034 (line number of husband) and v133 (education). Maybe I could get, for instance, the husband's education level by using these two variables? Any leads would be very appreciated. Thanks again!

Usually, if the variable for husband's level of education is NA, it's because there is no husband. However, you might be able to reduce the NA cases somewhat by doing what you say.

In the CR file, partners are given on a single record if they name each other (with v034 and mv034). For those pairs, the characteristics of the husband, as reported by the husband himself, are right on the wife's record. You could sort the CR file by v001 v002 v003 and merge the husband' data into the IR file, at least for those women who are in the CR file.
