Dear All,

I have a question related to the education variable.

Variable hv106 (highest educational level attained) is categorised 'no education, preschool', primary, secondary, higher and don't know.

From what I can see, hv107 (highest year of education completed) takes values between 0 and 7, this can't mean that these are the grades of the students.
When I take hv108 (education completed in single years) it ranges from 0 to 19 and it being calculated as:

0 + hv107 if hv106 = primary
5 + hv107 if hv106 = secondary
12 + hv107 if hv106 = higher
0 if hv106 = no education,preschool

1. I want to know, what grade the child is in?
Since primary is staring from 0, can I take that if hv108 is 4 would imply the child is in grade (year) 4 and say if it is 11, the child is in grade (year) 11?

2 children might have same YEARS of schooling but they are in different grade/year.\
For example Child X and Y can have 8 years of schooling but Child X might be in grade 8 and child Y might be in grade 7 due to repeating one grade.
For a case like this, how would hv106, hv107 and hv108 be recorded?

Thank you.

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff members: Tom Pullum and Fred Arnold:

In the household questionnaire for the NFHS-3, Column 18 asks whether the person attended school or college at any time during the 2005-06 school year. If yes, Column 19 asks "During this/that school year, what standard/year is/was (NAME) attending? In India, the questions do not ask about the educational level, just the grade that the person was in. Then Question 20 asks whether the person attended school or college at any during the previous school year (2004-05). If yes, Question 21 asks what standard/year (NAME) attended in that school year.

During data processing, hv108 was constructed as a recode of hv106 and hv107. The easiest way to show how that was done is with the following table. It gives the value of hv108 for each combination of hv107 (rows) and hv106 (columns). Ignore the "Total" row and column.
