As a part of a knowledge synthesis project on primary healthcare in India between UNICEF, Basic Health Services (BHS), and the Centre for Healthcare at IIMU, we at the Centre for healthcare are currently working on policy briefs on multiple PHC-centric topics. One such policy brief is on the relative advantages, disadvantages, and considerations for promoting institutional childbirths at the Primary Health Care level vis-à-vis the secondary or tertiary care level. The policy brief is being written considering key issues concerning maternal and infant health indicators and how strengthening the primary health care system could lower maternal and infant mortality. To make an informed recommendation, one of the essential pieces of information we require is the state-wise proportion of births at PHCs/CHCs/DHs. It would be of immense help if you could guide us on where we can find the data on childbirths by the institution level if it is already made available.

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Fred Arnold:
The NFHS-3, NFHS-4, and NFHS-5 recode files include the requested information on the proportion of births at PHCs and CHCs, but the information is not available specifically for those categories since they are combined with other categories of institutions. For example, the full range of places of birth for NFHS-5 is shown below from WQ448:
Births in HDs are not included. I assume that you are referring to Health Departments, but I'm not quite sure. I suggest you examine the Woman's Questionnaires for NFHS-3, NFHS-4, and NFHS-5 to see what response categories were included in each survey, and then decide how to proceed with your research.
