Hey,

I would like to pool the two rounds from 1999 and 2008 but have troubles matching the regions properly. There are 5 regions in the 1999 DHS and 6 regions in the 2008 DHS.
According to the maps in the final reports, some states "switched" regions so it seems rather impossible to match them.

Does anybody have a quick-fix solution for that or is it simply not possible to align them?

Thanks a lot,

Lukas

Dear Lukas,

Thanks for your post.

It is true that boundaries of the survey regions changed between the 1999 and 2008 rounds of the Nigeria DHS. A good place to view and compare region boundaries over different survey rounds is the boundaries page of our Spatial Data Repository website http://spatialdata.dhsprogram.com/boundaries.html. Select Nigeria from the drop-down menu in order to view and download the DHS region boundaries for each of our surveys in that country. You'll notice that the 2008 DHS is representative at two levels at one level there are the 37 individual states, while at another level, the states are grouped into 6 zones. In the 1999 survey, the states are grouped slightly differently into 5 regions, and the survey is not representative at the lower level of the individual states.

Both the 1999 and 2008 survey datasets contain a variable named shstate, which gives the state in which each cluster is located. You may match the regions across the two surveys based on this.

However, we do advise caution when comparing these two surveys since the 1999 survey was not designed to give representative indicator estimates at state level.

If you have any further questions please reply.
