Hi Everyone, I am carrying out analysis of the calendar data for the 2011 and 2016 dataset and I am interested in the reasons of method discontinuation of each method. However, after creating the methods and reasons string variables I realised that codes do not match those in the tool. For example the contraceptive method list of codes I can see "123456789BCLMNPTW" in the data (2011) whereas the tool has "123456789JKLMXY".

Your help is welcome.
Thanks

Hassard

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

For some general information about the calendar, we have the Contraceptive Calendar Tutorial at https://www.dhsprogram.com/data/Calendar-Tutorial/index.cfm. I assume you are familiar with that. For the interpretation of survey-specific codes, I usually am able to find them in the questionnaire. Go to the final reports on these surveys, the questionnaire in an appendix, and find the instructions for interviewers for filling in the calendar. Please let us know if this does not include the letters you are looking for.

Dear Janet,
Thanks for the reply.
I am actually following the calendar data tutorial. The challenge is the codes in the calendar data to not match those in the questionnaires. When I substring the "vcal_1 and vcal_2" to get the method and reasons codes respectively below is what I get,

The methods and reasons codes in 2011 dataset are;
Method: 012356789BCLMNPTW ('4' is missing)
Reason: 12346789ACDFKW ('5' is missing

The methods and reasons codes in 2016 dataset are;
Method: 012356789BCELMNPSTW ('4' is missing)
Reason: 12346789?ACDFKW ('5' is missing and ? is a code)

When you compare these codes with what in the questionnaire (see list below) they do not much.

Could you please provide some more detailed information so we can better advise you?

Can you let us know:
• Which survey you are using (Include country name and year)?

Dear Janet,
Thanks for the reply. I am using UDHS (Uganda-DHS) for 2011 and 2016 data sets.
