It would be valuable if the DHS can include a short set of questions on disability that could be asked to all adults in the household who are being interviewed - not as a proxy .

These are the questions I would propose. They are compatible with work that WHO and the World Bank are doing on a national disability survey instrument and hence would enable comparison.

For the first seven the scale is 1 (None) to 5(a lot)

"Thinking about your health, ..."

..How much difficulty do you have seeing [without glasses, if using glasses]?

...How much difficulty do you have hearing [without hearing aids, if using hearing aids]?

...How much difficulty do you have walking or climbing steps because of your health?

...How much difficulty do you have remembering or concentrating?

...How much difficulty do you have washing all over or dressing?

...How much difficulty do you have doing household tasks?

...How much difficulty do you have with feeling sad, low or depressed because of your health?

Keeping your difficulties in mine, to what extent does your environment make it easy or hard for you to do the things you need or want to do?
Very easy

Somewhat easy
2
Neither easy nor hard

Taking everything into account, how bothered are you by these difficulties?

1 Not at all bothered

5 Extremely bothered
