Hi, I am currently using the Indonesian special DHS for never-married men and women 15-24. Unlike the standard DHS, there is no wealth index variable for the 2012 and 2017 data, while the wealth index is available in the 2007 dataset."qhwlthi."

The wealth index quintile is available in the household dataset for 2012 and 2017. Still, I find it difficult to distinguish the case identifier for the same sample included in the special DHS.

I tried browsing the forum for similar topics on how to construct the weight index for these special Indonesian DHS (unmarried men and women 15-24) to no avail. Any help is much appreciated!

Thank you,
Syauqy

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

The youth surveys in Indonesia are indeed "special" surveys and they have their limitations. I believe that about half of the unmarried women and men age 15-24 come from the standard survey in the same year and about half come from other households in the same clusters. For the first half, you can get hv270 from the standard survey, matching qhclust and qhnumber in the OD file with the cluster number (hv001 or hv021) and household number (hv002) in the main PR file (you can restrict to cases with hv101=1, to have one record per household). For the second half, you do not have the variables that were used to construct the wealth quintiles. You are not just missing hv270, you are missing a lot of other potentially useful information about the household. You may be able to construct something similar to hv270 for those households, but you simply cannot construct hv270.

Thank you for the kind response.

It would be better for me to avoid the wealth quintile variable for the Indonesian "special" survey.
