Hi everyone,

I am currently working on my master thesis using the Ethiopian DHS survey (2000 and 2005), household member recode (PR), and I need to know the ethnic group of each female between 14 and 17 years old, or at least the ethnicity of their household/household members.

I know that this variable already exists in the women (IR) and male (MR) recode, but these two don't gather information on girls below 15, and as I said, my target population covers girls aged 14.

How can I get a variable that indicates to which ethnic group females (14-17) belong to? Any idea?

Following is response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

Ethnicity was not explicitly obtained for household members younger than 15. You have two options. The easier option would be to change the age range of interest to 15-17. The harder option would be to try to estimate the ethnicity of 14-year-olds, by looking at the mother or father or household head. If they all have the same ethnicity, then you can be pretty sure that the 14-year-old has that ethnicity too. You could develop some rules for assigning ethnicity for the other cases. That's all I can suggest.
