For Liberia DHS 2019-20, the LBIR7AFL (datafile for women) shows 21 records coded as dot/period for the variables v716 (Respondent's occupation), and v717 (Respondent's occupation grouped). I understand that in the Stata datafile (LBIR7AFL.dta) records coded as dot/period imply 'not applicable'. However, I am unable to figure out which filter(s) would impel this coding.

I will be very grateful for your help/guidance please.

Thanks

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

These cases are almost certainly not NA, but should have been coded 0, 97, or 99998. I see that codes 97 and 99998, which appear in the value label, were not actually used. Interviewers were probably told to avoid 97 and 99998 and may have forgotten that they actually existed. I would arbitrarily shift any of those three codes, in effect removing them from the analysis. I don't think there's really anything else you can do.
