Dear all, the birth size is categorized as very small, smaller, smaller than average, average, larger than average, and very large in NFHS 4 data for India. How this variable has been categorized. Whether it is a subjective judgment of respondent or any process DHS has followed.

Yes, it's a subjective judgement, based on the response to Question 442 in the Woman's Questionnaire:

"When (NAME) was born, was (he/she) very large, larger than average, average, smaller than average, or very small?"
