Dear All,

I would like to conduct a multilevel analysis using IDHS 2017. I have constructed several community variables, such as the community poverty variable by aggregating individual values into community/cluster values. However, when I want to construct cluster-level weights I couldn't find the average number of households in the enumeration areas, per region, and type of place of residence (urban and rural). My question, how to construct the cluster-level weight without that information?

Thank you

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

In 2020 we published a methodological report that describes how to calculate (or approximate) cluster weights.

Let us know if you have questions about how to apply it to the Indonesia 2017 survey.

Hi Bridgette,

I have already read the report and somehow got confused in identifying the total number of census clusters by strata. In the report (Zimbabwe DHS), to compile parameters for level-weights calculations, we need information about the total number of census clusters 𝐴ℎ in stratum h for all strata which can be found in Table A.3. Meanwhile, I couldn't find Table A.3 in IDHS 2017 report. Could you please advise me which table that can be referred to? Or Did I misinterpret the information written in the report?

Many Thanks,

Dwita

Following is a reply from Senior DHS Sampling Specialists, Ruilin Ren and Mahmoud Elkasabi:

DHS has had very limited involvement in the Indonesia DHS surveys since 2002. Appendix A did not become a standard part of the main reports until Phase 6 of DHS (around 2008). Therefore the Indonesia DHS final reports have never had a full appendix A. Perhaps you can obtain the information from Statistics Indonesia, or find it in other reports they have issued.

Hello dwita_siloam,

I have encountered a similar challenge to yours in establishing cluster-weights within the Indonesian DHS, mirroring the procedures outlined in the recently published work utilizing the Zimbabwe DHS. If you have successfully addressed this matter, I kindly request your guidance on navigating through this issue. Your insights would be immensely appreciated.
I may also be reached at d508110001@tmu.edu.tw for further correspondence on this matter.

Thank you in advance.
