Dear DHS team,

I've done a search for my issue in this forum but couldn't find this specific request covered in any previous posts. I'm currently using the 2012 DHS individual recode file, and the country-specific occupation variable v716 does have labels, but they are not explicit (they only say "groupe 1", "groupe 32" etc.) Do you know where I might be able to find a record of which occupational categories these codes stand for by any chance? I'd really appreciate any help with this. Many thanks in advance.

Best,
Celine

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

In the main report on this survey, table 3.6.1 on page 36 gives the distribution across major categories of occupations. The bottom row of that table says there are 2248 women.

If I open the IR file and enter "tab v716 if v716>0 [iweight=v005/1000000]" I get a distribution across categories of v716 that adds up to 2248 women. If you match the percentages in that distribution with the percentages in the bottom row of the table you should be able to match the categories with the codes (at least the first digit of the codes). I expect they are in the same sequence.

It would be better if we had words in the labels for the categories of v716, or other documentation. I looked at the questionnaire in Appendix E of the report. It doesn't include pre-coded categories. Unfortunately, this indirect approach seems to be the only option.

I expect that the categories correspond with those used by the Comoros statistical office at the time of the survey. They may have a website with links to reports that you can examine.
