How do I get to find "female genital mutilation or cutting" and "obstetric fistula" as Indicators to include in the Data Table? I would like to compare these two indicators (amongst others) in women from sub-Saharan countries. Thanks for your help.

Are you referring to using StatCompiler to do so, or which variables to draw from in the datasets in SPSS/Stata/SAS, etc?

Dear Samadoul,

Using the survey search tool on the DHS program site, http://www.dhsprogram.com/What-We-Do/Survey-Search.cfm, I see that Benin 2011-12, Burkina Faso 2010, Cameroon 2011, Congo (Brazzaville) 2011-12, Democratic Republic of Congo 2007, Cote d'Ivoire 2011-12, Equatorial Guinea 2011, Ethiopia 2005, Guinea 2012, Kenya 2008-09, Malawi 2004 and 2010, Mali 2006, Niger 2006 and 2012, Nigeria 2008, Rwanda 2005, Senegal 2010-11, Tanzania 2010, and Uganda 2006 and 2011 all included questions on fistula. Let me know if you need more assistance.
Thanks,
Sarah DHS

Dear User,
I have compiled and attached a list of completed surveys with fistula questions. The comments in the spreadsheet show the questions asked in the questionnaire. These will most likely be country specific in all the datasets. These variables will start with the letter "S" in the recoded data sets.

Dear Samadoul,

Obstetric fistula is a country specific variable, so the name is going to differ from survey to survey. You could search the pdf questionnaire in the final report for the string "fistula". For country specific questions, the variables are generally named and coded in the same way as they were on the questionnaire. If it exists, the variable will have a leading "SH" if the question was asked at the household level, a leading "S" if asked at the women's level, and a leading "SM" if asked at the men's level.

Or, you could open the .map file (which is within the .zip downloaded from the web site), in a text editor and search for the string: "fistula". If you already know questions were asked on fistula, this would be easier, because you'd see the variable names, based on the search. See example below for two related variables from the Congo (Brazzaville): Standard DHS, 2011-12 map file (cgir60.map)

S1012 Ever heard of fistula
S1013A Information on fistula: radio/TV/newspaper

I hope this helps.
