Dear Sirs,

I'm working on estimating several indicators using the total fertility rates and I use SPSS , I want to see how (TFR) changing by cohort for every age group
Do you have any resources on how to calculate these indicators particularly in SPSS ?

Thanks a lot.
Zak.

I don't understand your question. First, what is the meaning of "working on estimating several indicators using the total fertility rates"? How can the estimation of indicators "use" the TFR? Second, what is the meaning of "changing by cohort for every age group"? The TFR is a period-specific summary measure of fertility across all age groups. It is not age-specific, and DHS surveys are not well-suited to calculating the comparable measure of completed fertility for cohorts of women (a cohort is a group of women born at the same time, e.g. born in 1960-64). Please clarify your question.

thank you for your email...

Just I try to compare the ASFR by birth cohort and age group from (15-49) by using 5 wave-DHS of Egypt. The attached file is the example that I want to do for every age groups (15 -49).
thank you ....

You can probably get all the indicators you want from STATcompiler, without re-calculating them from the individual-level data files. All of the age-specific fertility rates, for example, are available there. You would assign a "reference date" to each indicator, using the mean date of interview and then going back 2.5 years for an estimate that applies to the five years before the survey, etc. You could smooth the estimates with a statistical procedure or just take them exactly as they appear in STATcompiler.

You are probably going back too far in time with the asfr for 15-19. My advice would be to go back no more than ten years before the first survey.
