Hi,

In v717, women/respondents are classified as either : professional, clerical, services, skilled manual, unskilled manual, agriculture - self employed, agriculture- employee, and in some countries domestic/housekeeping. I'm wondering if there is any standardization re: how occupations from v716 are categorized in v717 (i.e. the aggregate variable)?

Thank you!

Dear User,
This is taken directly from the Standard Recode Manual which can be found on our website:http:// www.dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-DHSG4-DHS-Questi onnaires-and-Manuals.cfm
Quote:

V717 Standardized respondent's occupation groups. Agricultural categories also include
fishermen, foresters and hunters and are not the basis for selection of agricultural/nonagricultural
workers. In countries, where it is not possible to differentiate between selfemployed
agricultural workers and agricultural employees, no attempt has been made to use
other information, and code 4 has been used for both categories. The analyst may wish to
use other related information to differentiate between these two categories.
BASE: Women who are currently working or who have worked in the last 12 months
(V731 = 1 or V731 = 2).

If you have additional questions after reviewing the information in the recode manual, please feel free to post again. Thank you!

Hi,

Thank you so much for your reply. I saw this text in the manual. But I'm wondering more about how 'service' and 'unskilled manual labor' are defined. Because each country has their own occupations I was wondering, in general, what kinds of occupations go into those two aggregate categories in v717.

thanks you

Dear User,
A response from Technical Expert, Dr. Fred Arnold:
Quote:
The DHS occupation categories are based on the major occupation groups in the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO). The major ISCO groups and the occupations that fit within each major group are available at: http:// www.ilo.org/public/english/bureau/stat/isco/isco88/major.htm. However, each country can make modifications based on their own census occupation grouping, the need to incorporate additional occupations that may not be common elsewhere in the world, or other considerations.
