I have learnt that the new DHS series have taken the section on the reasons for stopping use of a contraceptive method out from the questionnaire. I am mainly speaking to the vcal_2 column. Kindly confirm to me if this is true and if this applies to all upcoming surveys.

Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Kia Reinis:

We appreciate your interest in DHS data. You can also confirm for yourself and learn more from checking out the current Model questionnaires that are available for download from our website. We also archive the Model questionnaires from earlier DHS phases. Link to current Model questionnaires is below.

Regarding your current question and reasons for discontinuation, take a look at the Woman's Questionnaire; WQ312 asks about the reasons for each discontinuation of contraceptive use during the several years prior to the date of interview, and reasons are also coded into the calendar, which appears on the last page of the questionnaire. Our general advice is to read and refer to questionnaires whenever analyzing DHS data, as variable names may too brief to provide a full picture of what data are captured and from whom.

Regarding "all upcoming surveys", we cannot speak for surveys that have not yet occurred, but all surveys begin with the Model Questionnaires to inform country-specific questionnaire design and we expect that to continue. If there is a specific survey or country you are interested in, the best source is the questionnaire itself from that country, since each country adapts the questionnaires as needed and is appropriate to that country.
