Dear DHS-Team,

I would like to use the DHS surveys for Pakistan for the years 2012/13 and 2006/07. However, for my research question at hand, it is crucial to obtain some sort of information about the geographic location of the

I would like to quickly pull together all the information that I obtained so far from reading various posts in this forum:

Firstly, the 2006/07 survey comes with GPS data (my request for access is still pending) and one can eventually use this data to find out the district name for each cluster.

Secondly, for the 2012/13 survey, you stated in a previous post that the GPS data is not yet distributed and will not be made available in the future. However, when another user asked for district names for the DHS conducted in 1990/91, you were able to provide the district names and further information on cities within the district for each cluster. In this post from Mid 2013, you stated that similar information might be available for the 2012/13 survey in the future. I was wondering if it would be possible to get access to such a list by now.

Thirdly, I understand that cluster GPS coordinates are randomly displaced in order to protect confidentiality and that caution applies to analysis below the DHS region level as the households chosen in each cluster were not selected to be representative for the particular location of the cluster, but rather for the DHS level. I was wondering if you could provide further information on the way in which the households are chosen within the cluster and in what dimension they might differ significantly from the average household within that cluster area. I am asking this as depending on the selection process and how salient the selection criteria is within the research question I would like to purseu, the non-representativeness might be of more or less concern.

I apologize for the lengthy message and I am looking forward to your response!

Please do not hesitate to ask for further clarifications in case I did not express myself clear enough!

Thanks for your help!

Best regards,

Andreas

The District classification for the Pakistan 2012 survey is attached to this post.

Household selection within a cluster is discussed elsewhere such as here (among others): http://userforum.dhsprogram.com/index.php?t=tree&th=982& amp;goto=1710&S=a62297a3e9176c3b004c51934fd4b1bb#msg_171 0

However, the basic summary is that the household selection within a cluster is random.
The issue regarding the below-region level analysis has to do with the cluster selection not the household selection. Clusters are selected using an inverse proportional to size method. That process is based on the population size of EA and not geographical location or geographic size of an EA. It is possible to have districts or areas within a region that have no selected DHS clusters, there is likely people living in that place they just didn't happen to be selected for the survey.
This causes issues when trying to use the cluster level estimates for interpolation or district level estimates. More on issues of interpolation can be found in Spatial Analysis Report 9, http://dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-SAR9-Spatial- Analysis-Reports.cfm
