I am hoping to use DHS data to run a multilevel logistic regression on gender based violence using the domestic violence module. I have heard from one source that STATA is the preferred software for multi-level modeling but I was hoping to use SPSS to run the analysis as that is the statistics software package I am most familiar with. Do you know if SPSS can adequately run multilevel logistic regression or are there caveats I should be aware of? Should I consider using STATA? It will likely be a two level or possibly three level hierarchical model. Many thanks for your input.

Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Tom Pullum:

We can't help you with this question. We only have a couple of SPSS users on the DHS staff and they do not use multi-level modeling.

Your question is not specific to DHS data, so I suggest that you look for an SPSS users forum or a general expert on SPSS. Stata, especially version 13, would meet your needs, but you may not want to shift to Stata just for this.
