Hello,

I am using the variable s303 in the 2011 DHS for Nepal ("how long have you lived apart from your husband"). I think the output is in CMC, but I am not sure since the results do not make sense. the lowest value for s303 is 100, which equal to about 8 years and the largest value is 222, which is about 18.5 years. I was wondering if these results make sense or if the values for s303 are in some other format different from CMC.

I am working in SAS and I turned off the user formats because I have been unable to get them to load properly. Could this be a formatting issue? if so do you know what the frequency of s303 is suppose to look like (or a sample of the output showing what it looks like?)

I don't see s303 in the Nepal DHS 2011 data, but it sounds like the variable is in a "units" and "number" format. The first digit is the units and the last two digits are the number. Thus 100 means 0 in whatever unit 1 is (I suspect months), and 222 means 22 in whatever unit 2 is (probably years). This variable is probably not a CMC variable. If you can tell me exactly which variable you are looking at and in which dataset (the original dataset name), then I can advise further.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your fast reply! I think typed the variable incorrectly. The variable is S604a "time not living together". It is found in each of the birth, children, and individual women's file.

I think you are right about it not being a CMC variable, but it would be great to know more about it.

Thank you
Derek

Yes, for this variable codes 100-190 are months 0-90 (199 means months, but the number of months is missing), and 200-222 means 0-22 years.
