Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

Are you referring to some variable described as "socioeconomic status" in the data files or in the final reports for this surveys? If so, please be more specific.

For the 1993 and 1998 surveys you can find files GHWI31FL.dta and GHWI41FL.dta, respectively, that contain the wealth index for each household. You can merge those files with the other standard recode files. The 1988 survey does not have an associated WI file and does not include the household-level variables required to calculate the wealth index.
