Dear DHS team and forum users,

I used the DHS STATcompiler to get aggregate statistics on neonatal mortality rate, maternal mortality ratio and maternal mortality rate. I have noticed that maternal mortality statistics are typically unavailable for most surveys, and in countries where they are available, they are typically only available in the most recent survey. Neonatal mortality is available for (nearly) all surveys as far as I can tell.

Could anyone kindly let me know what the reason for this is? Is there a problem with the earlier surveys that prevents calculation of maternal mortality statistics?

Best regards,
Christian

Thank you for submitting your question. Could you please provide some more detailed information so we can better advise you?
Can you let us know:

• Which survey you are using (Include country name and year)?
• Which data files you are referring to?
• Which software you are using (Stata, SPSS, R, etc.)?

If you are trying to match a Table in a final report, please also indicate which table and which estimate you are trying to match.

Dear Janet,

thank you for considering my question. I was referring to the STATcompiler (https://www.statcompiler.com/en/) which allows the calculation of aggregate statistics for various surveys without using the raw data. However, after reading some more information from the various DHS manuals, I think I have found the answer to my question. The maternal mortality estimates are only available in the small subset of surveys that used the maternal mortality module. Unless I am wrong about this, please feel free to close this thread.

Best regards,
Christian
