Dear all,
I am working on MIS data for some African countries. I encounter some difficulties.
1. District names for the Ghana MIS 2016 is not found, only the number/codes are available for the district. Is there any file that shows the names and the coresponding codes for the district?

2. In the GPS file, there is file called displacement read me that shows at what level the displacement is restricted. For Mali 2015 and 2021 MIS the restriction was made at cercle level, but cercle level observation is not found in the dataset. Is there any way to make cercle level analysis. The same is true for Burkinafaso, in which the displacement was restricted at the province level, while province level observation is not found in the data set.

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

First question. I opened GHPR7B with Stata and I see 29 values for shdistrict, but "tab shdistrict hv024" shows that the districts are numbered within regions. I constructed a unique code for district with "egen district_id=group(hv024 shdistrict)" and then entered "codebook district_id". It shows that there are actually 139 different districts. I try the same thing with the 2017 Special survey (GHPR7I) and the 2014 Standard DHS (GHPR72). The MIS was between those two surveys (chronologically). I get different numbers of districts in the other surveys. It could be that some districts were skipped or boundaries were changed. I had hoped that at least the number of districts in each region would be exactly the same for all three surveys.

We do not have a list of the names that go with these codes. You could try to find, perhaps in Ghana census publications, lists of the districts within the regions and see if they match up, at least in terms of how many districts were in each region. The numbering sequence used by DHS would probably match with the numbering sequence used by the statistical office. However, that's all I can suggest.

Second question. I don't quite understand what you are looking for, but have you found this information in the GPS files for any other surveys? If so, what is the name of the variable you are looking for? Please tell me and I can ask someone on the GPS team why it is omitted from the Mali 2015 and 2021 files.

To clarify the second question. In most GPS data files there is a file called GPS_Displacement_README which shows at what geographic level GPS information was displaced. I encounter two difficulties related to this:
One, GPS_Displacement_README file is missing in the following surveys
1. For Uganda MIS 2009
2. For Liberia MIS 2009 and for Liberia MIS 2011
3. For Nigeria MIS 2010
4. For Senegal MIS 2008/09

Can I get the displacement information for these surveys

Two: for example, in Uganda 2018/19 MIS GPS_Displacement_README states that the displacement was restricted at the district level and the corresponding district variable is found as shdistrict. For the Mali 2015 and 2021 MIS, GPS_Displacement_README shows that the GPS displacement was at the cercle level but the variable cercle is not found in the data set like that shdistrict for Uganda. The same is true for Burkina Faso 2014 and 2017/18 MIS, the GPS displacement was restricted at the province level, but the variable province is not found in the data set. The only geographic identifier in both Mali and Burkina Faso is region.
