Hello!
How can I determine the previous pregnancy number, previous history of a terminated pregnancy, and current pregnancy order? I am using the BDHS dataset.
Thank you.

Can you please clarify your questions? Specifically, which Bangladesh survey are you using? Please identify tables you are trying to match or variables in the data files or questions in the questionnaire.

Hello! Well, actually there is no table or variable regards to pregnancy order. But, I am intending to find out the risk factors of terminated pregnancy. As there is a variable of a terminated pregnancy, I want to find out which pregnancy number/order it was that has been terminated, and if the women had multiple terminated pregnancies which I mentioned as the previous history of another terminated pregnancy in my last inquiry. Can you please help me how can I identify or generate those two variables?
I thought in a way, but I might be wrong. If I count the miscarriage as a birth a determine the birth order and indicate it as the current terminated pregnancy, will it be an appropriate calculation?

I hope you can understand my asking and I am hoping to hear from you soon.

Thank you.

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

The birth histories include birth order (bord), but when there is no pregnancy history, we cannot construct a pregnancy order. We don't know about pregnancy terminations other than live births, except for the ones that occurred in the calendar (in the past five years).

It would be possible to figure out how many live births a woman had before a termination that appears in the calendar. You can calculate the number of births she had before the beginning of the calendar as v201-v208. You would then add the number of B's that occurred in the calendar before a termination that's in the calendar. That would not be the same as a pregnancy order, but it could be useful for your analysis.

In some surveys, vcal_6 gives more detail on the T's in vcal_1. It will tell you whether the T was a stillbirth, miscarriage, or induced abortion. However, not all surveys include vcal_6.
