I am trying to understand how the years of education in the women's recode is calculated for Cameroon and whether it changed over time. It appears that in the later surveys, classes 6 and 7 are combined (since they currently and formerly mark the end of primary school). However, in the earlier surveys, class 7 is counted as a separate year. Does this mean that in the earlier surveys the women with secondary school have a year "too much" of schooling compared to the later surveys?

One of the side effects of this is that literacy questions appeared to be asked for women with up to 7 years of education in surveys 22, 31, and 44, while it was only up to year 6 for survey 61.

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

I did "tab v107 v106" in all the surveys (22, 31, 44, 61, 71). In the column for secondary schooling, v107 consistently allows for 1 to 7 completed years. In the column for primary schooling, b107 allows for 1 to 7 years in the 22, 31, and 44 surveys, but for the 61 and 71 surveys it only allows for 1 to 6 years. I notice that in the last two surveys, there is a bump in the frequencies at 6 years, suggesting that 6 and 7 were combined. Probably there was a change in the educational system so that the maximum number of years at the primary level changed from 7 to 6, and beginning with the 61 survey, 6 and 7 were consolidated in either the questionnaire or data processing. You could look back at the questionnaires given in an appendix for the 61 and 71 surveys, and you could try to get information about changes in the structure of primary and secondary school in Cameroon.

The range in number of years for v107 is survey-specific and is determined by the country, depending on its education system.
