I need to analyze child nutritional data by maternal HIV status. How do I merge the two (children data and HIV data)

The issue is children where included regardless of whether or not the mother was surveyed. So I need to remain with data for children whose mothers where surveyed and then merge with HIV status of the mother

We have had countless postings on the topic of merging DHS datasets. If you search with keywords "merge" or "merging", you should find answers to your questions.

For additional information on merging, please see the examples in the Guide to DHS Statistics - search for "Matching and Merging Datasets". Also, please see the following page for more information on merging: https://dhsprogram.com/data/Merging-Datasets.cfm

Dear Sir/Madam,

In my recent exploratory research using the 2014 GDHS, an academic editor requests that I replace HIV testing status with HIV status. Could you share this data with me or direct me to its source?

Best,
Samuel

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

The choice of term would depend on what you are talking about. We refer to "testing status" to mean whether the person ever had an HIV test (other than a test as part of the survey--the 2014 survey included an HIV test for eligible respondents). "HIV status" refers to whether the test done as part of the survey had a negative or positive result.

If you are analyzing the variables used in tables 13.11.1 and 13.11.2 in the main report, then it's testing status. If you are analyzing hiv03 in the AR file from the survey, then it's HIV status.

Dear Tom,

Many thanks for your reply.

I am analysing HIV status (negative/positive), and I was requesting help with accessing the data (since it is not part of the "general data"). I guess it is the AR file I need your assistance with getting (i.e., how/where to apply for it).

Best,
Samuel
