Hello,

I am working with the variables documenting disability in Colombia DHS 2010. The DHS report shows that information about the intensity of the disability experienced by each individual has been collected, however that information is not available in the main data file I downloaded. Instead of showing the intensity for each functional difficulty, the disability variables in Colombia 2010 show the following output:

sh42a_01 -- has difficulty to: move around/walk
------------------------------------------------------------ ------
| Freq. Percent Valid Cum.
---------------------+-------------------------------------- ------
Valid 0 no | 49262 95.75 95.75 95.75
1 at birth | 57 0.11 0.11 95.86
2 accident | 570 1.11 1.11 96.97
3 illness | 1490 2.90 2.90 99.87
4 violence | 25 0.05 0.05 99.92
8 don't know | 43 0.08 0.08 100.00
Total | 51447 100.00 100.00
------------------------------------------------------------ ------

Can you please tell me if I can get access to the intensity of the difficulty experienced?

Thanks in advance!

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

All of the data from this survey would be in the publicly available data files. Nothing has been held back. Looking at COHR61FL.dta, I see that sh42a through sh42i are coded for different disabilities and the labels are the same for all of them, as you described, presumably describing the origin of the disability. Do you have reason to believe that information about the intensity of the disabilities was also collected in this survey? I recommend that you look at the Household Questionnaire, which is in an appendix to the main report. This was one of the first surveys to include questions about disabilities, I believe, and it preceded the current version of the disability module.

Hello,

thank you for your answer. The Colombia 2010 DHS report has the following table(cuadro 17.11.1), which reports the level of severity of difficulty by functional domain:

Severidad
de la dificultad
Ninguna 62.8 56.6 48.8 44.1 89.0 88.6 80.9 85.8 62.7 59.9 66.6 41.3 na
Leve 19.1 17.4 16.4 16.8 4.1 4.7 10.4 7.0 14.5 15.9 13.9 26.7 na
Moderada 12.3 13.6 17.6 18.0 3.1 3.2 5.6 4.3 11.8 12.7 10.2 21.5 na
Severa 3.6 5.3 9.8 11.3 1.8 1.6 1.8 1.8 5.5 5.4 4.4 8.6 na
Extrema/no puede
hacerlo 2.2 7.1 7.4 9.8 2.1 1.9 1.2 1.1 5.5 6.2 4.9 1.9 na

This is the information I am looking for, however, it does not seem to be included in the publicly available datafile.

Following is a response from the Colombia Survey Manager, Guillermo Rojas:

The 2010 DHS in Colombia included a special study for adults 60-69 that are usual residents. None of these individuals were eligible for DHS and therefore their variables weren't included in the recode file.
