Is there information in the DHS data sets that one can use to calculate the distances to the nearest health facilities? If that is the case how can one go about doing this?

The distance as such is hard to find and may be DHS surveys could include that question in future surveys. Still, you have an idea of whether the distance to health facility is a problem or not for a woman through the variable v467d.

I couldn't find variable v467d in the 1997 DHS (Senegal) - maybe this question wasn't asked. Was there any other variable collected in previous DHS that gave an idea about distance to the health facility?

There were 2 country specific variables which might help:
S483C Time to ORS source
S483D Distance to ORS source
Q483B in the questionnaire asks "which source"(s) do you know?"

Hi, could you please specify which questionnaire has those questions? I couldn't find them.
I am interested in finding a measure of distance to health facility, besides the V467D which I will use as perceived distance.

Dear User,
Q483B quel endroit connaissez-vous?
This is in the woman's questionnaire and asks "which source do you know?"
Q483C Combien de temps faut-il pour aller de chez vous à cet endroit?
also in the woman's questionnaire and asks "How long does it take you to go there?"
Q483D Quelle distance sépare cet endroit de chez vous? "
also in the woman's questionnaire and asks "how far is this place from home?"

Questionnaires are generally located in the back of our final reports. In this case it is Appendix E. Our publications are bookmarked. You should not have a problem locating the woman's questionnaire. You can find the Senegal DHS 1997 final report on our website: http:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-FR89-DHS-Final-Repor ts.cfm

Thanks for your prompt response. The problem is that I am using the Uganda 2011 survey and the recode manual for DHS 6 (march 2013), those questions are not included in the questionnaire.
Do you know if there are any other questions that could help?

Dear User,
In the Uganda DHS 2011 woman's questionnaire there is Q1008:
Q1008 Many different factors can prevent women from getting medical advice or treatment for themselves. When you are sick and want to get medical advice or treatment, is each of the following a big problem or not?
c) distance to health facility

This is the only reference I see. That variable is recoded into V467D.

There are no other references for Uganda DHS 2011. If the specific question you are looking for is not in the questionnaire, then it did not get asked and data does not exist for this survey, except for V467D. If there was an additional question regarding distance that was not part of the standard recode variables, it would then become a country-specific variable. However, I checked the questionnaire, and did not find anything additional.
Thanks!
