Egypt DHS 2015 - Variables v106-107-149 [message #15814]

Dear all,

I am using DHS 2015 and I don't understand what variables v106-107-149 correspond to in the individual questionnaire and what is the difference with a113-a114, the questions in the questionnaire which refer to education.

Following is a response from DHS Chief of Data Processing, Guillermo Rojas:

Variables V106-107-149 are recodifications from the original individual education questions. S113 and S114 are the original questions as they are defined in the questionnaire and V106-107-149 are standard DHS recodifications used for international comparability.

Note that the documentation at IPUMS DHS makes it easy to answer this type of question. If you navigate to the variables that interest you, each variable name is a hot link. (You can switch between the IPUMS and original DHS variable names by clicking a button at the top of the page). Click on the link and it will show you a series of tabs.

For the education variables, the DESCRIPTION, COMPARABILITY, and SURVEY TEXT tabs are especially useful. One thing I like about the IPUMS documentation is that, when variables are constructed by ICF, there are links in the documentation to the underlying variables. IPUMS documentation also provides links to closely related variables.

If you use IPUMS documentation, please be sure to cite us!

I did not know about the IPUMS-DHS features for exploring variables, thank you for pointing those out. I cannot make use of it at the moment as I am using the Egypt special 2015 DHS which seems not to be available through IPUMS website, although should I decide to complement the analysis with the 2014 one, I'll be sure to follow your suggestions (and cite you).
