In our research, we wanna to explore the associations between the source of drinking water and sanitation and malarial infection risk. However, we failed with the claasification of WASH.We have read other researches and they classified the source of drinking water into protected water and unprotected water. We have found that in DHS surveys, the source of drinking water includes piped water (piped into the dwelling, yard, or plot; a public tap/stand pipe orborehole, etc.);tube well water;dug well water (protected/unprotected/borehole with pump);surface water (protected spring, unprotected spring, and lake/pond/etc.);rainwater, etc. We have known that we can treat the piped water;protected dug well water;protected spring as the improved water, but what about the tube well water and rainwater? How do people in sub-Saharan Africa get the rainwater as their drinking water?

Another question is that how can we classify the type of sanitation into two types?

If you ask my questions, you will do me a favor and meanwhile thank you very much.

Hi, you can check the JMP classification for water and sanitation. This should help as well:
