Hello,
Using ETIR70SV.zip data set, I want to categorize preceding birth interval in to Short and Not short birth interval. On the dataset, there is a list of variables of preceding birth interval(months) from b11_01 to b11_20 and only b11_01 to b11_13 have observation. It was recorded in months (i.e. unit of measurement). My questions are:
1. What does b11_01, b11_02, b11_03,.........b11_20 each represents for?
2. How can I categorize in to short and not short birth interval to know to overall magnitude of the country?
I was actually reading the Guide to DHS statistics which is very helpful but am not very clear with the above points. I am very thankful if you share me your do file and look forward to your suggestion and guidance. Thank you in advance!

In the file you are using b1_1 represents info on the first child, b1_2 on the second, etc... so the _X relates to which child it is and the b1 relates to the actual variable.

You can categorize however you want... but it might be easier using a different recode where each row represents just one child's birth (KR or PR files).

Hello,
please explain what do you mean by each "row represents just one child's birth (KR or PR files)".Does it represent only the information on last child?
