Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:
In the women's file (the IR file), v201 is the number of children ever born and v218 is the number still alive. With other variables in that range you can break this down into sons and daughters. Age of the woman, in five-year age intervals, is given by v013. Any tabulations should use the weight variable, v005. I wonder if you are planning to use Brass's PF method to get indirect estimates of child mortality. That's not necessary, because the survey report and STATcompiler include direct estimates based on the birth histories.
