Hi,

I am working on the recently released DHS 2015-2016/NFHS4- Report. Variable V024(womens recode), MV024(mens recode) and HV024(household recode) should contain information on the participant's Region(1-4)(due to the Recode Manual). But when I open the dataset, the variable has a range of 1-36, suggesting that it is coded for the participant's state. For my analysis, I need a state variable.

Does someone know how the states are coded, i.e. which number represents which state?
Thank you very much in advance!

Following is a response from Senior Data Processing Specialist, Mianmian Yu:

Although HV024, V024, MV024 could be used for region in other surveys, NFHS-4 use them for state. For example, Delhi is coded as 25 in these variables. Hope it helps.

Thank you for the answer.

But what I actually wanted to know is if you know which number represents which Indian state in this variable(e.g. V024= 1 means "Goa").
It is not included in the Recode Manual or the NFHS-4-Report, neither the questionnaires.
Do you know where I can find this information?
