Hi,

It seems that in the DHS Children's Recode for the Nigeria 2003 survey, the v113 (drinking water source), when v113=32 in the stata files, the label for this value is "Protected well in yard/plot", whereas in the other Nigeria surveys, 32 is labeled as "Unprotected well." I wanted to confirm that this difference is intentional and not a potential data entry error.

Thank you.

-Peter

Dear User,
This is not an error. In Nigeria DHS 2003 it should be "Protected well in yard/plot". The coding in the recode file is country specific here.
Thank you!

While the variable on drinking water is a standard variable in terms of having a standard name, the response categories are survey-specific and vary widely across samples, including across different years for the same country. In IPUMS-DHS, we created a single variable to cover the drinking water information, where the same code means the same thing across all surveys, and we had to create a 4-digit variable to retain all detail across surveys. The first digit identifies broad categories that the researcher might combine, while the second, third, and fourth digit provide additional detail, as shown here:

https://www.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/HV201#codes_s ection

This variable is based on the household variable for drinking water (HV201), and we link the household and woman's files to the children (KR) and birth (BR) files in IPUMS-DHS, so this is the drinking water variable for the KR (child) cases in IPUMS-DHS.
