I have a question regarding the DHS recode manual.

My project is analyzing the maternal health care utilization for the latest pregnancy of a mother.

One of the variables I am controlling for is if the respondent has ever had a termination prior the pregnancy of interest. Would that be variable v234 in the DHS manual? When I check the specific survey recode manual the variable says "other such pregnancies" so I am bit a confused.

Any clarification would be amazing!

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:

If you look at the questionnaire you should be able to find the question corresponding to v234, which is something like this:

"Since [date] have you had any other pregnancies that did not result in a live birth?"

[date] should be January of the calendar year five years before the survey, which is usually the same as the month specified by v017.

The KR file lists the LIVE BIRTHS since v017, and v234 refers to other pregnancy terminations.

Dear Sir or Madam, I have a question on the recode information related to AR files. In the recode 6 manual, it seems that I cannot find descriptions/sections that explain the variables used in the AR files. Can you please point me to a resource that will have this information? I found the biomarker questiionnaires, and while the Stata do files do provide some description of the different variables and their meanings, it would be great to have that referenced as part of a recode documentation.

Thanks for your kind support! this is my first post and thanks to Archives email staff for their timely response in the past.

Best,
Leed1

There are very few variables in the AR files. As a general rule, hivclust is equivalent to hv001; hivnumb is equivalent to hv002; hivline is equivalent to hvidx (all of these are ID codes in the PR file). The weight is hiv05, which is analogous to hv005 but should be used in place of hv005 (or v005 or mv005) if you do a merge. The result code is hiv03, for which the value labels are self-explanatory and may differ slightly from one survey to another. Other variables, such as hiv01 and hiv02, are almost never used, except for the kinds of analysis done in the recent Methodological Report 22 (https://www.dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/MR22/MR22.pdf).
