Most of the guidance I've found on the definition of skilled birth attendant says the definition is country-specific. Does the DHS maintain a list of which medical professionals qualify as skilled on a country-level or survey-level basis? Or are the Final Reports the best source of this information?

Thank you for your time,

Hi Alex,

I think each country has its own definition of what a skilled birth attendant is (maybe someone from the DHS program can confirm this)... This means that the variables that make a skilled birth attendant are different across most countries (most of the time).

Therefore, you should always read the DHS final report of the country from which you wish to analyse data from.

Dear User,
Mlue is correct. The best place to find out about these specific categories is to go through the Standard Recode Manual https:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-dhsg4-dhs-questionna ires-and-manuals.cfm, the final report for the country of analysis and to look at the documentation provided when you downloaded your data. The documentation often contains specifics on anything that is country specific. Thank you!
