Hi there,

The 1995 DHS report has a table on the current use of contraception for men (pg 50), categorized for all men, currently married men and sexually active unmarried men. Unfortunately all the survey reports for the following years don't have this table.
I'd like to ask how the percentages were calculated for the 3 categories (which variables were used), especially for sexually active married men- were all men other than those who are currently married (that would be divorced men, never married men, etc) included in this group?

Thanks much!

This table is based on mv312 for the contraceptive methods, and the 3 groups are based on mv502 and mv527. All men includes all, Currently married men includes those coded 1 on mv502, and sexually active unmarried men are those coded 0 or 2 on mv502 (not married) and had sex in some period prior to the interview (based on mv527). Typically we use one month prior to survey (mv527 is 101-130 (1-30 days), 201-204 (1-4 weeks)), however, in this case if looks like a period longer than one month has been used. You can probably work out what was used for the time since last sex to be considered as sexually active with some trial and error - I can't tell from the table.
