Hello,

I was trying to find what the recode values are for the V024 or V101 variable in the Mozambique 2011 survey. I know that these are regions code and for Mozambique there are 11, which leads me to believe that it corresponds to the 11 states of the country, but I would like to know if this is true and which state is which number. Anybody have any idea or experience with this?
I was curious about the regions as I am studying the malaria prevalence, which can definitely vary by more than just urban and rural.

Thank you,

Sonja

Sonja,

You can find this information easily at IPUMS-DHS (www.idhsdata.org). It's pretty intuitive; here are the steps to get there.

At www.idhsdata.org, click on "Select data," then click on "Women" as your unit of analysis (or children or births, whatever you prefer). This will take you to the data selection page. Click on "Select samples," "Mozambique-2011," and then "Submit sample selections." Now you will only see the variables available for this particular survey.

Use the drop-down Topics menu to find "Geography, Single Sample Geography." The variable name is a link to the name of each region in Mozambique. (If you click on case-count view, you can see how many women are in each region. Also, notice the tabs across the top on this web page--each one provides useful information about the variable.)

If you want to create a data file, you can login with your DHS username and password.

IPUMS-DHS is a project supported by NICHD, USAID, and ICF International. It's run out of the Minnesota Population Center. I hope you find it helpful.

Hello Liz,

Thank you very much for answering my question and sending me the link to find the data for the regions that I needed.

Sincerely,

Sonja

Sure. I should also mention that you can typically get region value labels from a downloaded DHS file with the Stata command:

tab v101

Good luck with your research.
