Hi,
I am wondering how to measure the infant and child mortality from DHS data set.
It would be so nice if I know the step-wise instruction to calculate the infant and child mortality from DHS data set, especially NDHS (2011).
Thank you.
Madhu

Dear User,
You may want to access the following resources to help you in your analysis:
The Guide to DHS Statistics http://www.measuredhs.com/publications/publication-dhsg1-dhs -questionnaires-and-manuals.cfm and the Standard Recode Manual http://www.measuredhs.com/pubs/pdf/DHSG4/Recode6_DHS_22March 2013_DHSG4.pdf

What do you mean by a "proxy variable to measure trends"?

what I mean by proxy variable is that which variable or very close variable in DHS can I use to measure under 5 mortality. or which variable did DHS used in their report to measure trend in U5M.

Best Regards

They calculate it - it isn't a proxy, it is an estimate.

There are instructions here on pages 90-94 (as Trevor mentioned in another thread): http://www.dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/DHSG1/Guide_to_DHS_Statis tics_29Oct2012_DHSG1.pdf#page=97

There is also information here: http://dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/fr175/08chapter08.pdf

There is also another method that I outlined here: http://userforum.dhsprogram.com/index.php?t=msg&th=142&a mp;start=0&S=8019308c0b1fe335aae675a1ce57d3bb

So there isn't a "variable" that is U5 mortality, it is something you have to estimate from the birth history data - essentially, you can see how many children were born, and how many survived to age 5. It is a bit complicated to do it exactly as the DHS does, but you should be able to follow the instructions on the Guide to Statistics I linked above, or the version that I describe in the other thread. If you have specific questions after that, I can try to help, but in general you should start with those resources.

Dear User,
Let's start by finding out which survey and dataset you are using. Next, can you please be more specific about what you are trying to accomplish? Are you trying to replicate a table in a final report? Here are some resources to help: The Guide to DHS Statistics http:// www.dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-dhsg1-dhs-questi onnaires-and-manuals.cfm, The Standard Recode Manual http:// www.dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-dhsg4-dhs-questi onnaires-and-manuals.cfm and the section on our website Using Datasets for Analysis http://www.dhsprogram.com/data/Using-Datasets-for-Analysis.cfm Please review and if you have additional questions, please feel free to post again. Thank you!
