Hi,

I am working on Abortions using Indian DHS dataset. I am using IAIR.DTA file. I have three questions and your quick response is highly appreciated, as I am already running short of time.

1. I have prepared the event file and I am getting exactly the same figures for India and states as provided in table 6.16 and 6.15, but the number of pregnancies (as provided in table 6.15, page 180) are not matching. For instance, the number of pregnancies in my case is 286,791 but in the report it is 276,321.

Place of residence Live birth Abortion Miscarriage Still birth Number of pregnancies
urban 87.4 4.4 7.5 0.8 69,640
rural 90.5 2.6 6.0 1.0 2,17,151
Total 89.6 3.1 6.4 0.9 2,86,791

2. I am not able to calculate the third column of table 6.14, please let me know how you have calculated this. I am not sure whether you have taken all the terminations in the past five year or only the last termination as in table 6.15.

3. Why the number of pregnancies are different in the two tables (table 6.13 it is 300,185 and in table 6.15 it is 276,321).

Once again I would request you to please respond as soon as possible.

Thanks
Kirti

Dear User,
You may want to look at calendar data. We have a calendar tutorial here:https://www.dhsprogram.com/data/calendar-tutorial/
The following resources are also available for your use: The Guide to DHS Statistics https:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-dhsg1-dhs-questionna ires-and-manuals.cfm,
The Standard Recode Manual https:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-DHSG4-DHS-Questionna ires-and-Manuals.cfm,
using Datasets for Analysis https://dhsprogram.com/data/Using-Datasets-for-Analysis.cfm and a series of videos to help
guide you with your analysis https://blog.dhsprogram.com/dhsdataintro/.
The IUPMS website is also a great resource: https://www.idhsdata.org/idhs/ For specific assistance with Stata, please visit

Dear Liz,

Thanks for the mail. I have already seen those links.

I wish to inform you that I have resolved all the issues except one which is as follows.

The third column of table 6.14 and table 6.13 (See NFHS national report, page 178-179), which is percentage of pregnancies in the past five years that ended in the non-live birth is not matching (both the percentage and sample).

Kindly let me know how the DHS has calculated this. I am using the event file (five year history and also I have removed the current pregnancies). I understand that the denominator is all the pregnancies (births + any terminations) in the past five years (excluding the current pregnancies). I am using the variable ev902 (which is variable vcal_2 in iair file). It would be great if you could let me know the inclusion and exclusion criterion which needs to be taken care of. I would highly appreciate if you could share the STATA codes for the same.

As I was able to match the table 6.15 and 6.16 (percentages as well as sample), I hope I have created the event file correctly but I don't know what is going wrong in calculating the percentage of pregnancies in the past five years that ended in the non-live births.

Your quick and positive response in the matter is highly appreciated.

Thanks and regards

Kirti

It is hard to follow just from your description. Please provide your Stata code and we will take a look and try to provide an answer.
